Brief Individual Assessment

The brief assessment will provide an individual assessment of cognitive abilities to clarify the type and level of learning difficulty. Children with learning difficulties will be identified and their cognitive strengths and needs analysed.

Each child will be individually given a short battery of tests administered via computer. These will assess reasoning, phonic skills and reading skills (The particular tests will depend on the age of the child). The test will take between 30 and 50 minutes per child. The tests are in the form of games and are usually enjoyable to children. The permission of parents will be sought prior to testing.

Report

The school and the parents will each receive an individualised report on the child detailing the results and the educational implications of these. The report will give suggestions for teaching strategies and educational interventions that may be helpful for the child.

Benefits

  • Discrepancies between actual literacy attainments and expected attainments based on intelligence are measured
  • Underlying problems (e.g. in vision, memory and phonological processing) can be identified
  • The school gets recommendations on interventions that they can implement to address specific problems that have been identified.
  • The results can be used to develop educational plans for individual students.
  • The assessment is brief but valid.
  • The results of the assessment can be made available immediately
